Trap and Field's Around the ATA article from the Atlantic Provinces ATA Delegate

May 2025

Hello from the Atlantic Provinces.

I’m writing this month’s report a few days after St. Patrick’s Day, known locally as Paddy’s Day and a provincial holiday in Newfoundland and Labrador. The long-term weather forecast is also indicating that Sheila’s Brush won’t be showing up this year. Sheila’s Brush is well known in Irish and Newfoundland folklore as being the name given to a storm that happens shortly after Paddy’s Day and often signals the last big storm of winter. A “brush” is defined in the Dictionary of Newfoundland English as stormy weather. And who’s Sheila? Some folklorists say she was Paddy’s girlfriend or wife. In other renditions, she’s a saucy woman that Patrick ran into while driving snakes out of Ireland. In any case, Sheila doesn’t seem to have interest in showing up this year. And yes, there is a Dictionary of Newfoundland English; I cod you not.

Congratulations to Atlantic Provinces ATA Secretary and Alternate Delegate Janaya Nickerson and her dad Robie, or Herbie as his friend’s call him, on their shooting at the Spring Grand in Tucson. Both shot some personal bests and won a few trophies for their efforts. Herbie won Class C Champion with a 97 in the Tucson Doubles Class Championship and 4th place in the Winchester Handicap Championship with a 95. In the Caesar Guerini Preliminary Handicap, Janaya shot a 94 and won Lady I Runner-up after a shoot off.

The Nickersons also have a busy shoot schedule for this summer. They plan on attending the Canadian Trapshooting Championships, the Ontario and Alberta Provincial Shoots, and of course the Atlantic Provinces Provincial Shoot, which is being held at their home club, the Highland Gun Club, in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.
