Happy New Year from the Atlantic Provinces.

Members of the St. John’s Rod and Gun capped off the 2025 season with a tribute to long-time member Bob “Two Box” Nightingale. Bob was one of the top shooters at the club when I joined in 1998. He also served on the club executive for many years and always had words of encouragement and advice for me when I started helping with the administrative side of things. Bob was a great club volunteer and helped with many club projects.

Bob was an avid outdoorsman and regular trapshooter until he developed heart problems a few years ago. After a heart valve replacement, Bob continued hunting, fishing, and trapshooting albeit at a reduced paced. He would show up on our regular shoot days with two boxes of shells, shoot a couple of rounds, have a chat, and then head back home. That was about all Bob could manage – Two Boxes.

After a slip and fall last winter, Bob broke his leg and his mobility decreased to the point that he and his wife Bessie, had to move into an extended care apartment. Their health got progressively worse as time passed and Bob died this past June. Bessie passed away a few days later.

Bob’s son and grandchildren regularly shot the club’s fun shoots, and they contacted me about doing something to remember Bob. We had the first Two Box Shoot in late November: a round of trap singles followed by a round of wobble trap. Bob liked shooting wobble trap, so it seemed like a good fit. Troy Coldwell won the shoot and got to wear Bob’s shooting vest for the afternoon, like the green jacket at the Masters.

To all gun club managers, if you haven’t already done so, it’s time to start planning for the upcoming trapshooting season. To register your ATA shoot dates, submit an ATA Registered Shoot application to the Atlantic Provinces Secretary, Janaya Nickerson, for approval. The application is available on www.shootata.com.
